HENRY MONTEROSE - ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I am attracted to form, space, and their potential for interpretation across both two and three dimensions. My approach to formal and spatial problems is abstract yet grounded in classical solutions, balancing the rapid spontaneity of handwriting with the slow, deliberate work of solving mysteries. Whether working on paper with ink and graphite, building three-dimensional forms from metals, wood, and stone, or capturing the human figure within fashion photography, I look for a dynamic dialogue between the material and the maker.
This investigation extends directly into my furniture design, where chairs fulfill a deep need to express a sense of space through the juxtaposition of forms. Built to human scale, chairs transcend traditional sculpture by occupying central, intimate spaces within a room and demanding multi-sensory engagement through sight, touch, and physical balance. By employing metal welding techniques to introduce elements of fantasy into functional objects, I explore fundamental sculptural elements—scale, free form, and spatial containment—while avoiding the tyranny of commoditization.
Similarly, in my photographic work, the human figure transforms into the ground, the space, and the object of desire. By subverting traditional commercial presentation and focusing on planar relationships rather than wide-angle spatial illusions, these works investigate the complex interplay between viewer and subject. Across all mediums—whether welding metal, carving stone, or framing a photograph—my background in science and industry helps me navigate technical challenges. Ultimately, I strive to unify my concept of art regardless of medium, using subject matter merely as a point of departure to investigate how space, shadow, and structure affect the viewer intellectually and sensually.
