Description:

Spanning 350 lots, this sale is led by two exceptional centerpieces. A St. Louis Gingham Bleu weight numbered 14 of 50 with its original box and certificate offers a scarce modern tribute to the celebrated antique St. Louis Gingham overlay design, while a Paul Stankard Blackberries Vine weight from the 1970s, numbered 27 of 75, presents a lifelike botanical study with individually lampworked berries, leaves, stems, and root structure. Around these two, the collection spans Perthshire, Baccarat, St. Louis, Orient & Flume, antique American glasshouses, and a run of rare studio names, offering entry points for new collectors and serious targets for specialists alike. Pre-Bidding is underway. Submitting a maximum bid today ensures your place is secure when live bidding closes this auction on September 24, 2026 at 1:15 PM ET. About the Collector This is the opening chapter of a lifetime's worth of acquisitions built by a collector who spent fifty years learning to tell craftsmanship from decoration. Roger G. Jacobsen's eye was formed early, on a pair of unmarked St. Louis weights bought at a sale near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, and sharpened over decades running his own dealership, Paperweights of Quality, and forging direct friendships with the makers themselves. He was a personal friend of Stuart Drysdale, founder of Perthshire Paperweights, who stayed at his home for days at a stretch during American sales trips, and Jacobsen still holds three intact suitcases of Perthshire factory samples from 1978 through 1980 that never reached general production. His relationship with Orient & Flume went beyond that of a typical dealer, a friendship that gave him access inside the California studio itself, and he wrote about the maker for the Paperweight Collectors Association's Annual Bulletin. St. Louis St. Louis is the deepest and strongest category in this collection, anchored by the Gingham Bleu weight described above alongside a pair of weighted candlesticks limited to only 50 sets and numbered 31 and 32, a 1996 Anthemis overlay paperweight numbered 9 of 50 featuring a moss ground clematis bouquet beneath a cobalt double overlay, and a millefiori vase produced for the firm's 150th anniversary in 1995 and numbered 8 of 150. Further highlights include a 19th century early millefiori weight, a 1980 gilded salamander overlay numbered from an edition of 300, and a run of crown, swirl, snake, and floral basket designs spanning the 1970s through 1990s, most bearing the maker's signature SL cane. Perthshire This section is built on Jacobsen's closeness with the factory, led by a 1981H millefiori overlay limited to 152 pieces worldwide and a 1973 Swan in the Pond design, alongside dozens of signed and dated PP pattern weights spanning the 1970s through 1990s. Baccarat The Baccarat offering ranges from a 19th century interlaced trefoil millefiori weight to a 1973 lampwork salamander and a 1967 zodiac close pack dated with its own signature cane. Sulphide collectors will find a deep run of presidential and historical cameo portraits, including Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, and Andrew Jackson, most bearing the etched Baccarat mark and period correct faceted or star cut bases. Antique American Glass A standout group of Union Glass Co. personalized weights, custom lampwork pieces bearing hand lettered names, initials, and dates from as early as 1909 through the early 20th century, offers a rare window into American glasshouse history. Joining them is an antique New England Glass Company millefiori weight dated 1852 to 1874, featuring a lampwork initial motif and a running rabbit silhouette cane from a factory that closed its doors in 1874. Orient & Flume and Studio Rarities This section includes a numbered 1979 bluebird weight from an edition of 250, along with dragonfly and floral lampwork designs. Studio rarities are led by the Paul Stankard blackberry vine weight described above, joined by a Heilman Roessler Coral Cave weight from the sculptor's Habitat Series, a large lampwork marine scene set in a geode form, a Charles Kaziun millefiori weight on an aventurine ground signed with his gold K cane, Victor Trabucco floral lampwork designs from the 1980s, and Francis Whittemore lampwork rose fragrance bottles in both blue and white. Cristal d'Albret Sulphides A dedicated run of Cristal d'Albret sulphide cameos captures a broad sweep of twentieth century history, with commemorative portraits spanning Lindbergh, Ben Gurion, Prince Charles, Sitting Bull, and Sadat and Begin, several numbered from limited production runs and set on the maker's signature star cut bases. Part 1 is only the beginning. Register now to bid on the opening installment of a collection five decades in the making.
