But the history behind this home goes much deeper… 🎥 A FAMILY CONNECTION TO THE EARLY DAYS OF HOLLYWOOD The family's history traces back to Albert E. Smith, one of the pioneers of the American motion-picture industry and co-founder of Vitagraph Studios. Smith began making films in the 1890s, at a time when motion pictures were still in their infancy. He and his partners developed cameras, projectors and other innovations while competing with some of the biggest names in the emerging film industry, including Thomas Edison. Vitagraph Studios eventually became one of the largest silent-film studios in the world. Smith was associated with numerous early innovations in filmmaking and held multiple patents. Vitagraph was later sold to Warner Bros. in 1925. Then came another chapter in Hollywood history… In 1931, Albert E. Smith purchased the Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard, which had originally been built as a luxury apartment complex. He converted the property into a hotel, helping begin the next chapter of one of Hollywood's most iconic addresses.
